Healthy Lungs: The 5-Element and TCM Way

The lungs connect us with the outside world; the act of breathing draws in air and, therefore, qi from the external environment. Depending upon where we live, the time of year, and other factors affecting that air we breathe, the lungs may require extra attention in an effort to support their health and longevity. Chinese Medicine theory shows complex relationships among the various organ systems of the body; these relationships suggest that each organ and meridian system must be taken care of for a state of health and balance to exist.

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is said that the Lungs rule our overall Qi. The lungs receive and filter fluids from the spleen. Then, nutritive fluids are sent to the skin and inner pathways of the body to provide necessary moisture; impure fluids are sent to the kidneys to be further filtered. The lungs rule the skin and hair, as well; if we do not consume adequate fluids, our skin turns dry and hair becomes brittle. If you experience a shortness of breath, a lack of energy for speaking, or fatigue, it may be time to send some energy to the lungs.

5 Element (also known as Classical) Chinese Medicine places additional significance on the lungs and their relationship to purity. The lungs are our gateway to the divine or sacred energy of the universe. Through the lungs and the very act of breathing, we take in the in-spir-ation that nourishes our spirits. According to 5-Element theory, the lungs are in a very close relationship with the heart, with the lungs overseeing the rhythms of the heart and body. Perhaps you have experienced this yourself. When your heart is racing, slow down your breathing and your heart will follow; we often do not realize that our heart started racing because our breathing was out of balance (especially in such instances as anxiety or fear).

In order to maintain optimal function of the lungs it is beneficial to incorporate healing and nourishing practices for the lung meridian, such as Qi Gong and Acu-point massage. Qi Gong, which literally means training the qi (chi) of the body, nourishes and strengthens the overall energy we use everyday. Working with specific Acupressure points, we are able balance out disharmony and encourage a healthy flow of energy through the meridian system. In this month’s self-care corner you will learn a simple Qi Gong exercise and an Acu-point that are useful in restoring health to the lung system.

May peace and health be upon you!
